Thoracic Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a spinal condition where the spine bends unnaturally, forming a curve. When the affected area forms the middle and upper back, it is recognized as thoracic scoliosis. In most of the thoracic scoliosis conditions, the curve bends to the right, and it’s only in rare cases where it bends to the left. However, while the condition is mostly common among children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 years, it can happen to anyone. The risk is highest during puberty as the curve progresses due to rapid growth. And since the condition is progressive, timely treatment of scoliosis becomes increasingly important.
Does this Scoliosis Cause Pain in the Body?
Pain and discomfort in the body usually prevail during moderate to severe thoracic scoliosis. If the patient is having mild scoliosis, there won’t be any pain. In the initial stages, the pain starts as a dull ache in the middle and upper back and in the chest. The pain stems from strain in muscles, uneven pressure on vertebrae, or nerve compression. That’s why it is always asked that patients with scoliosis must avoid indulging in activities that put strain on the spine. The more you perform activities, the higher the risk. If the right care and treatment are not taken, the condition worsens, and so does the pain. With time, it becomes challenging to manage pain.
Is There Any Treatment for Thoracic Scoliosis?
When the patient has a mild curve under 25 degrees, they are under observation. Patients have to go fr regular checkups and perform exercises as suggested by a scoliosis specialist. The specialists suggest various preventive measures to control the problem, right at this stage. However, if the curve is between 25 and 45 degrees, the patients are given custom braces to stop the further progression. And in severe conditions, where the pain is beyond management, and the spine is greater than 45 degrees, the specialists suggest surgery. So, when it comes to thoracic scoliosis treatment, the treatment options suitable depend upon the severity of the condition. Mild to moderate cases are manageable with non-invasive treatment options such as therapy, a brace, and care, but severe cases need surgery.
