Scoliosis of the spine is a curvature of the spine of 10 degrees or greater. Since the spine is supposed to be straight when viewed from the front, it can cause a severely asymmetrical and skewed posture.
The real danger of scoliosis is its potential to worsen over time. Since the spinal cord is inside the spine, as the scoliosis progresses, so too do bodily symptoms. People with scoliosis often suffer from chronic back pain, fatigue, headaches, neck pain, and ultimately arthritis. Because nerves can become pinched and irritated, scoliosis patients can develop sciatica, numbness, tingling, and poor circulation. Countless other problems also result from mechanical pressures onto the internal organs (i.e. stomach, bowels, heart, lungs, etc.).
Although children may not have any symptoms, typically, if the scoliosis is left untreated, it progressively worsens over time. It is critical to have all children screened for scoliosis. Early detection and appropriate treatment (SpineCor bracing) is paramount for prevention and/or correction. A quick check to assess children for scoliosis takes 3 seconds!
